Hello, and happy holidays to everyone!

We’re all here because we hold a similar belief: traveling is our favorite! But sometimes, the best place to be (especially around the holidays) is right at home.

It’s lovely to uphold traditions, be with loved ones (whatever that means for you), eat loads of comfort foods, and cuddle up in warm blankets while it snows. (If you live in a non-cold climate, I’m not sure what the equivalent of that is?!? But, also…lucky you.)

This year, I feel especially blessed because several of my and my husband’s siblings are headed home, and we all get to hang out. It’s not very often that I get to be with those nerds, so I’m pumped.

If you’re traveling this year, you might feel a mix of emotions—thrilled by the novelty of a new place yet wistful for the comforts of home.

And it’s perfectly normal to feel that way.

I’ve been there several times. For example, I’ve had holidays that looked like this:

  • Living in Russia as a young service missionary with my family halfway across the world.

  • Living in Belarus the next year…same story.

  • Working and traveling in Russia with my fiance (now husband) and sister.

  • Traveling in Greece, where Thanksgiving dinner was all the ferry snacks I could drum up

Memorable and fun—but not home.

Here are some things I did that helped bring a slice of home with me on the road:

  • Call home and talk to people I love

  • Set up and decorate a Christmas tree

  • Buy an American football and play a version of a Turkey Bowl

  • Find a restaurant that celebrates similarly to me and partake of their food

  • Host a mini holiday celebration with new friends and fellow travelers

  • Cook or bake traditional family recipes

  • Stream holiday movies or shows that remind me of home

  • Explore local traditions and blend them with my own holiday customs

No matter where you are this year, happy holidays! I hope the end of this year is bright and lovely. And I hope 2025 brings new opportunities and a lot of new adventures.

Thanks for reading,

Ashley
